Mississippi author, Teresa La Dart, has chosen to drop her copyright lawsuit against singer Taylor Swift. La Dart had previously accused Swift of plagiarizing « a number of creative elements » from her poetry book, Lover, published in 2010, and incorporating them into Swift’s book accompanying the 2019 album of the same name. The lawsuit claimed damages exceeding one million dollars owed to La Dart by the 33-year-old pop star.
However, La Dart’s lawyer filed a motion in a Tennessee federal court announcing the permanent dismissal of the case. This action reportedly occurred without any settlement being reached. Swift’s legal team had criticized the lawsuit, deeming it « legally and factually baseless, » and asserting that the alleged elements in question were generic design formats not eligible for copyright protection. Doug Baldridge, representing Swift, argued that there was no possibility of copyright infringement on their part.
Throughout the process, Taylor Swift has remained silent on the matter since the lawsuit was filed in August 2022.
